Cargo insurance – what is it about?

During transit, loading, unloading, or while in storage, your cargo is exposed to numerous risks: accidents, negligence, robbery, fire, natural perils and similar. It is a common misconception that liability insurance obtained by cargo carrier or freight forwarder shall cover these hazards. Not quite so: carrier’s liability insurance shall only apply in cases where the carrier is held liable for the incident. Furthermore, carrier’s liability insurance is subject to international conventions that limit liability of the carrier to a certain value per kilogram of cargo. In other words, the same insurance indemnity would be paid for the same weight cargo of timber and smartphones!

To prevent this from happening, a proper cargo insurance is highly recommended. Cargo insurance is the protection of cargo owner’s interests, when the transported cargo is damaged, destroyed or lost due to the insured perils. The policy is valid throughout the cargo transportation cycle: loading, transportation by road, air, water or rail, storage in the transhipment warehouses and unloading at the point of destination.

What risks will we insure against?

  • All risks, except for uninsured events – for brand new cargo

  • Named Perils (accident, robbery, fire, etc.) – for the used cargo

  • Effect of temperature fluctuations – for temperature sensitive cargo
